Lift-and-Shift Isn’t Cloud-Native: Why Confusing the Two Approaches Can Cost You Dearly

Lift-and-Shift

“We’ve migrated everything to the cloud.” A common phrase from CIOs, CTOs, and IT leaders.
But the real question is: have we actually modernized?

In many cases, the answer is no. The result? Underwhelming performance, disappointed expectations, and frustrated teams. Welcome to the world of cloud false positives, where migration may seem like transformation, but in reality, it is just a disguise.

What Is Lift-and-Shift, and Why Can It Be a False Start?

Lift-and-Shift is one of the fastest and most common methods for migrating legacy applications to the cloud. It transfers existing software and infrastructure as-is into virtual machines or containers in the cloud, without significant changes.

The (apparent) advantages of Lift-and-Shift:

  • Fast to implement

  • Has a low initial cost

  • Requires minimal architectural changes

But it does not leverage the true advantages of the cloud, such as:

  • Automatic scalability

  • Distributed resilience

  • DevOps and CI/CD pipelines

  • Infrastructure-as-Code

In short, it moves, but doesn’t transform.

What Does Being Cloud-Native Really Mean?

Being Cloud-Native means designing applications with the cloud as their natural environment. It’s not just about moving—it’s about building to thrive in a dynamic, scalable, automated ecosystem.

Key features of a Cloud-Native application:

  • Microservices architecture

  • Native DevOps and CI/CD integration

  • Automated infrastructure management via Infrastructure-as-Code

  • Horizontal scalability

  • Flexible deployments

When to Choose Lift-and-Shift, When to Opt for Cloud-Native

Lift-and-Shift is suitable if:

  • You have an operational emergency (e.g., data center shutdown)

  • You need a quick first step toward the cloud

  • You don’t yet have the time or resources for a full reengineering

Cloud-Native is the right choice if:

  • You want to really innovate

You’re developing new products and services

You want a future-proof, globally scalable solution

Ultimately, it’s not just where you move software, but how you design it.
The cloud is an amazing opportunity, but to seize the full potential of the cloud, you need a paradigm shift:
from simply relocating to truly transforming.

Modernizing doesn’t mean just migrating. Cloud-Native isn’t a destination. It’s a mindset.
