FinOps: A Shared Culture Between IT, Finance, and Business

FinOps

In today’s landscape, more and more companies are adopting the cloud as a driver of innovation—but very few truly manage to govern it strategically. The issue isn’t technology: it’s strategy and organization. The answer is called FinOps. FinOps is not (just) a financial-technical methodology—it’s a shared culture that fosters collaboration between Finance, IT, and Business. Because without shared understanding, decisions about the cloud risk being short-sighted or misaligned.

FinOps: A Collaborative Model

A FinOps approach works only if it succeeds in aligning multiple perspectives:

  • Finance wants predictability, control, and cost optimization
  • IT wants scalability, performance, and speed
  • Business wants innovation, agility, and time-to-market

FinOps creates a common language to align these goals. It’s not easy, but it’s possible if everyone plays their part.

Who Does What: Key Roles in FinOps

Engineering / DevOps
Responsible for infrastructure and automation. They’re the first to detect waste, overprovisioning, and optimization opportunities. Their role is crucial in providing data on actual cloud usage.

Finance
Connects technical usage with financial outcomes. Translates usage into financial impact. Works to create budgets, perform forecasting, and measure the cost-efficiency of cloud resources.

Product Owner
Makes strategic decisions. They need to understand the cost of each feature so they can make informed decisions on what to maintain, evolve, or cut.

Cloud Center of Excellence (CCoE)
Defines policies, guidelines, and standards. Oversees governance and promotes an integrated vision of cloud management.

FinOps Champion
A cross-functional role that brings all stakeholders together. Facilitates communication, runs monthly reviews, and ensures the FinOps cycle is maintained over time.

When These Roles Collaborate:

  • Costs become transparent
  • Decisions are shared and well-informed
  • Waste is reduced
  • The cloud becomes sustainable and strategic

Without collaboration, FinOps remains just a good idea. With collaboration, it becomes a competitive advantage.

FinOps isn’t a project—it’s a mindset. It’s like any cultural shift: it starts with people. If you really want to make cloud a strategic asset, start here: get Finance, IT, and Business in the same room, speaking the same language, using the same data.
