A new chapter in IT innovation for Italy’s most iconic publishing group.
With over 900 million in revenue, more than 600 points of sale, and a widespread presence across the country, the Mondadori Group is one of the leading publishing companies in Italy. From books to magazines, through retail and education, Mondadori helps shape the present and future of Italian publishing every day.
In order to write this new chapter—technological, strategic, and human—it is significant that the Group chose to work with Hoverture in a journey of technological innovation. Modernizing infrastructure is a challenge far from trivial: bringing value into the world of tomorrow while not losing touch with the past.
Mondadori approached us with a clear request: to upgrade its Oracle databases from release 9 to 19 in order to improve its technological infrastructure. However, this technical upgrade—necessary because version 9 is now unsupported—was no longer accepted by the cloud vendor.
But the journey was not so straightforward:
- There was no direct compatibility between the two releases.
- The databases were critical for business purposes, tied to strategic and editorial applications.
- A solution was needed that would not disrupt or interrupt the Group’s daily operations.
The project began with an in-depth assessment phase of the databases: we studied the application landscape and its distribution in order to design a migration strategy minimizing risks and maximizing efficiency.
We then designed and built an infrastructure that could support the transition from Oracle 19 on-premise to the next step of migration in the AWS Cloud (RDS).
The chosen approach included:
Use of intermediate release (Oracle 11) as a DB “bridge,” necessary to enable logical migrations.
Use of Oracle GoldenGate to manage the step from 11 to 19 with zero downtime.
Combined logical and physical migrations, based on the nature of the databases.
It was a tailor-made approach, designed to meet both technical requirements and the constraints of legacy systems.

By upgrading its technology and moving to the cloud, Mondadori was finally able to abandon outdated releases that were more than 20 years old, consolidating its IT architecture and gaining significant benefits:
